At its core, Blackjack is a very simple game, the hand closest to 21 without going over wins. If a player exceeds 21, it is known as a bust and the player is eliminated from that specific game. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value and face cards, Jack through King, are all worth 10. The ace is the only card that has two different values. It can be worth both 11 and 1 depending on the other cards the player has and if it will cause the player to bust.

Each player sitting at the table is playing against only the dealer, resulting in the dealer loosing to some players and beating others. If the dealer and player have the same total, a push occurs, and neither the dealer nor the player wins. Players who push with dealer receive their original bet back.

Casinos offer different table minimums and these will be posted for players to see. Once initial bets are placed, the dealer deals the cards to the players at the table. The dealer deals two cards to each player and then two to himself, with the second of the dealer’s cards dealt face up for the players to see. The cards are generally dealt from a shoe and are constantly shuffled to reduce the likelihood of card counting.

If the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, the dealer will check the hole card; face down card, to see if he has blackjack. At this time, insurance is offered to all players before the game continues. If it turns out that the dealer has blackjack, all players who didn’t purchase insurance loose, unless a player also turns a blackjack, which would result in a push (tie).

A ‘blackjack’ or ‘natural’ occurs when a player has an ace and a ten-value card, this hand is an automatic winner unless the dealer pulls a ‘blackjack’ as well. Depending on the casino and their payouts, a ‘blackjack’ will usually benefit the player with a 3:2 payout on their bet.

In every Blackjack game, players have several decisions to make during the course of a hand. Players can hit, meaning they would like another card to try and get as close to 21 as possible. Stand, the player would like no more cards. Double down, a player can increase their wager to a maximum of double their original wager and they are dealt one more card. Similar to a double down, players can split their cards. Players split their hand and each card now becomes a new hand with a wager on each new hand. This option is only available when both original cards dealt have the same value.

A player only gets one turn around the table each hand. The players turn is over once they stand, double down to take a single card, or bust. If a player busts, he/she looses their bet even if the dealer busts.

Once all the players have taken their turn, the dealer will play out the hand against each individual player. In most casinos, the dealer must hit until he/she has at least 17, despite what players at the table have. For most casinos, bets are paid out 1:1.
